Before I wrote stories for children, I wrote stories about children, mostly my own. About a hundred of these were published in Western People magazine in the 80’s and 90’s. You can read some here.

A Quiet Car Trip

Baseball’s Better Moments

Iceberg Theory in Home Renovations

Sugar and Spice and Puppy Dog Tails

Watersliding Isn’t for Sissies.

Looking back at these columns, I think of them as a private writing school. I learned important things like writing to a deadline, writing even when I didn’t feel particularly inspired, and writing to an exact word count. (If I didn’t edit it, someone else would, and I quickly learned that I liked my own editing better.)
