Before I wrote stories for children, I wrote stories about children, mostly my own. About a hundred of these were published in Western People magazine in the 80’s and 90’s. You can read some here.
Looking back at these columns, I think of them as a private writing school. I learned important things like writing to a deadline, writing even when I didn’t feel particularly inspired, and writing to an exact word count. (If I didn’t edit it, someone else would, and I quickly learned that I liked my own editing better.)
